A favorite summertime activity across the world each year is Yard Saling. Whether your a buyer or a seller, yard saling can either be a fun and relaxing weekend activity or a serious business venture. Thousands have turned yard saling into a full time venture searching out items of value that sometimes go noticed by seasonal or part time yard saling sellers. Here’s a great example of a guy that collected a number of items that could easily be turned around and sold at a higher profit.

If you’re planning a yard sale out of your garage or driveway, strategy, pricing and advertising are keys to a successful sale. Early morning yard saling veterans will show up even before you’re got your stuff setup. Be prepared for that and post signs with your starting time. As well, make sure that you have anything of higher value closer by to where you plan on sitting. Plan for sun too… If you have a garage, place your higher value items in there and setup your shop in the shade. This allows you to take advantage of more room while creating a more formal store like setting for you yard saling visitors!

Here’s an example of an ideal yard sale setup!

Outdoor yard sale setup with multi rows.

In addition to your setup plan for pricing. Mark your items up 25% above what you are willing to sell it for. This will help with any negations. So for example, you have a book that you’re happy getting 1$ for, price it at $1.25 or even higher… Be realistic though, to high and people will simply ignore your item or leave.

Make sure you have enough cash on had as well. Lots of change for those yard saling folks that show up with $20′s. In addition to the variety of funds, seek out some additional help or support. Asking a friend of family member to assist with your yard sale will also help when things get busy. Trying to host your sale on your own could result in people losing patience and opting to leave early.

Yard saling can be very profitable as I mentioned earlier. Finding items priced low, could fetch you a much higher amount online through ebay or by hosting your own yard sale. If you’re planning on yard saling and making a business of it, plan your financials accordingly. As you buy inventory, plan for your time expense (gas, mileage, etc) on top of what you’d need to sell that item at to make a profit. Basic business sense, but people can lose sight of that when perusing a yard saling career!

Most of all, have fun yard saling. It’s a great way to kill an afternoon on a weekend, clean out the clutter in your home and either put a few bucks back in your wallet or remove a few bucks depending on whether you’re a buyer or seller!

My Talkit.ca Experience

I signed up with Talkit.ca in October 2010 and cancelled Rogers as my home phone provider. Was such a liberating experience! With Talkit being a relatively new company I thought this review would help others make the switch by sharing my experience, how their service works and my home configuration. As a user for a year and a half now, I have more money in my pocket and a simple yet dynamic home phone service.

Update October 4th, 2011

I’ve had the talkit service for a year now and just renewed for another year. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made and I’ve saved at least $150 in the first year above my initial cost. With my renewal, I’ll start saving $400-$500 dollars a year now above what I would have paid bell and rogers.

Update January 12th, 2012

I just returned from a trip to Florida with my family. I decided to take the talkit box with me and a landline phone to see if I could use the service from my hotel room! I took it apart within a couple minutes at home, had it packed up and really was no fuss. Upon arrival, I simply plugged the box into our LAN connection, plugged the power in and connected the phone and instant phone! We were able to call home locally with NO extra expense! Another incredible reason why you should consider talkit.ca for your home phone.

Talkit.ca Registration

I was initially skeptical considering the upfront cost. $140 for the hardware, $60 for the service and $25 to port my number, but considering that I would pay this in almost 6 months with Rogers, I decided to take the plunge. Sign up was easy, with an online form, option to pay by credit card and instant setup as a user. My hardware arrived within a week and was as described. A small box almost the size of a deck of cards that had in/out ports for high speed internet, power port and phone out. Very simple. Was also easy to setup and Talkit.ca provided me with a phone number out of the gate that I could use until my Rogers home phone was ported. The porting took approximately 2 weeks, and once the number was ported I quickly called Rogers to inform them their services were no longer required It was the best feeling in the world!

If you’re looking for a brand new number, Talkit.ca does offer lines in your city, which was a challenge before with companies like Skype or Majicjack.

Talkit.ca Installation

Installation was easy and I set my Talkit box up to all lines in our house. To do this, I have our high speed router and Talkit box stored in our electrical box closet where our cable comes in. I run the high speed internet cable directly to the Talkit box and then run a secondary cable from the Talkit box to our wireless router. Very seamless! I then plugged our main phone line that runs through to all phone jacks into the phone out connection on the Talkit box. Instant dial tone on every phone and it only took maybe 5 minutes to rerun the wires. Very simple!

For those of you considering Majicjack, the benefit to Talkit.ca is that you can connect your phone lines without a dedicated computer. Majicjack is USB driven and requires PC connectivity to establish a phone connection while Talkit runs independently.

Talkit.ca Features

The best part about the Talkit.ca service is no monthly bill. Additionally, you can call across Canada at no additional cost, you get all calling features like voice mail, 3 way calling, call display, etc, etc. with no additional charges. You can purchase credit to make calls internationally at pennies a minute and the annual service fee is $60. That’s it!

For the limited risk associated with the cost I would recommend Talkit.ca. If you’re a family that carries one to multiple cell phones already what’s the point in paying $400 a year for a land line. Stop paying multiple bills and get rid of Rogers or Bell today!

Welcome to the online Sugar Shack!

We have everything you need to know about Maple Sugaring, including the process, detailed instructions, equipment and more. Here’s what you need to know!

Maple Sugaring Process

In just a few steps, you can go from tapping a tree to finished product of fresh syrup on your table! Here’s the maple sugaring process!

Tapping a tree is fairly straight forward. Here’s some important things to think of before you do it!

Trees should be at least 1 foot in diameter and 5 feet or more above the ground. Maple trees less than 20 inches should only have one tap per tree, anymore and you could damage the tree. No tree should ever have more than 3 taps as again, you can damage the tree or cause disease.

Step 1.

Using a 7/16 drill bit, drill approximatley 2 inches into the tree at a height that works for you when you begin collecting. Make sure your drill bit matches your tap size. Remember too, that you’ll want to drill on an upwards angle into the tree so that gravity can work it’s magic!

Step 2.

Tap your tree on warm days to reduce the risk of splitting the tree to doing permanenet damage. Once you’re tapped, hang your bucket or container on the hook of the spout. Make sure you also have a cover or filter to apply within the bucket to avoid any falling debris or snow which could spoil your yield.

Step 3.

Once all of the maple sap has been collected, you can begin boiling. This process can be done a number of ways, but it’s best that it’s done out doors considering the amount of moisture the steam creates over a long period of time. Outdoor boiling over a fire is a popular choice and produces a rich bold flavor different from boiling over a stove.

Step 4.

Do not fill your pot to the top as it’ll boil over. Leave some room! Once you start boiling be patient, as it will take time to steam off the water content. You’ve reached Maple Syrup when the content becomes 66-67% sugar content at 7.1 degrees above the temperature of the boiling water.

Step 5.

Once you have reached the proper consistency and sugar content, run the syrup through a filter to remove and sugar sand. Once filtered, the syrup can be packaged into containers and are now ready for consumption.

Once you’ve successfully harvested your maple sap, boiled and completed the process, be sure to take the time to clean your equipment.

Maple Sugaring Supplies

Before you get started, you’ll want to make sure you have some basic supplies on hand to make the job of gathering maple sap easy with the least amount of effort. Here is a list of basic Maple Sugaring supplies…

Maple syrup filters
Maple spouts or taps
Grade sets
Maple sugar bucket covers
Maple syrup evaporators
Maple sap buckets

eBay is a great resource to find many of these items, in most cases like Maple Sap buckets, you can buy up large lots at a reduced cost. What you need of course will be dependent on the volume of Maple Syrup you plan on harvesting.

The quantity of sap can vary with different methods of tapping, the size and tree and seasonality also play important roles. Sap yield usually express in terms of the number of tapholes, rather than the number of trees. The average yield for on taphole is 5-15 gallons. That said, if weather conditions are excellent, one taphole can provide as much as 40 to 80 gallons in a one year. On average, 10 gallons of sap will provide one quart of syrup.

Maple Sugaring Equipment

If you’re planning on producing a large quantity of maple syrup, a maple sugaring evaporator might be the tool of choice. Typically maple sap evaporators can range between 5-10K in price but will harvest syrup quicker and more efficiently than outdoor fire and pot methods. For example an evaporator like the one pictured above can handle over 150 taps in a season.

Once again, eBay is a great resource for maple sugaring evaporator equipment. You can gauge prices before spending money so you know what you’re getting into. There are a number of other websites available that offer maple sugaring equipment, but do your research first! Hope you found this helpful!

I, like millions of others this winter have been glued to my TV each Friday night watching the unfolding drama of the newest hit TV show series, Gold Rush: Alaska! Todd Hoffman, along with his dad Jack and others made Friday’s worth watch again. With a quarter million dollars invested and no prior mining experience, this show was a hit right from the start!

It was interesting watching the drama unfold with Jack hitting gold fever within the first couple weeks digging holes everywhere, Jimmy Dorsey, the resident knucklehead constantly complaining and doing things his way made for some entertainment value that hooked me in. As the weeks passed by it was interesting to see the dynamic of Gold Rush: Alaska change. Personalities like Thurber and Chris really started to show personality supporting all of Todd’s hunches, Jack started to listen and stick to the plan and Harness came through in clutch situations to keep the gear running and the operation in full swing.

Gold Rush: Alaska is one of those guilty pleasures as you get to live vicariously through a rag tag bunch of Oregon guys going for broke, but just the same find yourself cheering on their progress in every episode. Through the last couple episode, I couldn’t help but skip to the end to see the end results. Knowing that they’ve the Glory Hole at Porcupine Creek and that gold is bountiful it will be interesting to see how Gold Rush: Alaska evolves during season two. Will Jack’s 6 million dollar guesstimate be true? We’ll soon see.. At the very least though, it will be interesting to see the popularity of this show increase and at the very least will be good to see the team of Gold Rush benefit from celebrity status to hopefully win back their initial expense and then some!

On a side note, Gold Rush: Alaska does a great job of capturing the essence of great teamwork, team dynamics and managing a project under tight timelines and a restricted budget. If you ever want to understand how to make a work or home project more effective and efficient, watch the inefficiencies through the first few episodes and apply it to your own surroundings
